About The Shell Bank Brigade
At Shell Bank Intermediate School (I.S. 14), we proudly call ourselves “The Brigade.”
This name reflects who we are as a school community—many diverse programs, students, and educators working together toward one shared mission:
Meet students where they are and help them grow—intellectually and emotionally.
Middle school is one of the most formative times in a child’s life. At Shell Bank, we are deeply committed to nurturing the whole child, ensuring every student feels supported, challenged, and inspired to reach their fullest potential.

Leadership
Shell Bank is led by Principal Patricia Lazo, whose vision centers on creating a school community where students, families, and staff feel connected, valued, and empowered. Under her leadership, Shell Bank continues to grow as a place where innovation, care, and high expectations come together.
A School Designed for Every Learner
One of Shell Bank’s greatest strengths is the wide range of programs we offer. Each program is thoughtfully designed to support different learners, ensuring that every child has a pathway to success.
Our screened Infinity Program is designed for accelerated learners who thrive in a fast-paced, academically rigorous environment. Students are challenged to think critically, problem-solve, and engage deeply with advanced content.

Academy (Zoned Program)
Our Shell Bank Academy provides a complete middle school experience grounded in strong academics, structure, and enrichment. Students engage in rigorous core subjects while teachers differentiate instruction to meet individual needs.
The Academy offers:
-
General Education, ICT, and self-contained settings
-
Structured grade-level cohorts that build strong relationships and consistency
-
A wide range of electives, including arts, technology, and world language
-
Extensive extracurriculars, athletics, and enrichment opportunities
Students benefit from a diverse and inclusive community, a data-driven teaching approach, and opportunities that extend learning beyond the classroom
The Horizon Program is a specialized setting for students with autism who benefit from a smaller, highly supportive classroom environment.
Horizon classes:
-
Are small (typically around 8 students)
-
Include a special education teacher and paraprofessional
-
Follow grade-level curriculum with individualized supports
-
Incorporate a structured social curriculum focused on communication and peer relationships
-
Utilize research-based strategies, including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), to support learning and behavior
Students also receive related services and supports tailored to their needs, helping them build independence, social understanding, and academic skills in a structured and nurturing setting.

The ACES Program is a specialized program for students with intellectual or multiple disabilities who participate in alternate assessment.
ACES focuses on:
-
Functional academics aligned to New York State standards
-
Communication, social-emotional development, and independence
-
Daily living skills and real-world application
-
Work readiness and self-advocacy
Students learn in smaller classes (typically 12:1:1 in middle school) with highly trained staff and individualized supports.
The program emphasizes:
-
Inclusion opportunities within the school community
-
Community-based learning experiences (e.g., shopping, life skills practice)
-
Building confidence, independence, and meaningful relationships
ACES helps prepare students not just for school success—but for life beyond the classroom.
